Update: Rip Crew gun battle results in 1 casualty, 6 detained

Yesterday, April 14, 2011, I reported about a shooting that took place near Antelope Peak, Pinal County. Here is the updated, clarified information regarding that incident.

Pinal County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call that information has revealed was placed by the victim's daughter who resides in Phoenix. The call was originally received by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. When DPS officers arrived they found a 35 year old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. DPS officers then turned the investigation over to the Pinal County Sheriff's office for further investigation.

According to the victim, who was transported by air to a local hospital for treatment, he and 14 others were travelling on foot from Mexico towards the rest stop near Antelope Peak. The route they were travelling is known to be a smuggling route used by cartels for drug runners. The group is believed to have entered the country illegally, and evidence found at the scene suggests they were smuggling marijuana into the country.

Upon approaching the area near the rest stop, the group was encountered by a "Rip Crew" and the shooting ensued. A "Rip Crew" is a group of individuals from a rival cartel. Their job is to secure the drugs being carried from the rivals. This appears to be what occured yesterday. Evidence at the scene supported these findings.

Authorities from PCSO, DPS, and the U.S. Border Patrol were able to determine that the "Rip Crew" members carried the marijuana taken from the victim's group to a vehicle that had stopped along Interstate 8. The vehicle then headed eastbound on Interstate 8. Authorities were able to follow evidence which led to a home in Stanfield where officers were able to detain 6 individuals at approximately 1pm yesterday afternoon.

So far, one injury and one casualty have resulted from this incident. No word has been given as to whether or not any one involved has been charged.

All suspects connected to this case are believed to be illegally in the United States.
