30 Drug Seizures, 14 Fugitives, 448 Immigration Violations

    C.B.P. News Release

30 Drug Seizures, 14 Fugitives, 448 Immigration Violations Intercepted near San Diego

    (Monday, August 10, 2009)

San Diego – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at ports of entry along the California/ Mexico border made 30 narcotic seizures with a street value of $1.2 million, captured 14 fugitives, stopped 448 cases of illegal immigration, and revoked a FAST participant within the last three days.

CBP officers intercepted 1,686 pounds of narcotics that included marijuana, methamphetamine, and heroin in separate incidents from 6 a.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. today.

During the three days, officers also apprehended 14 fugitives with outstanding felony warrants. The fugitives were wanted for crimes such as larceny, dangerous drugs and parole/probation violations.

Officers intercepted 448 violators of immigration law that included cases of illegal aliens hidden in vehicles, aliens who presented fraudulent documents and those who presented valid documents not legally issued to them.

On Friday, August 7, officers at the Otay Mesa cargo facility revoked a FAST participant after the 32-year-old male entered the export facility driving a tractor, pulling an empty 2007 Hyundai refrigerated trailer. Once officers determined the trailer had been reported stolen from Mira Linda, Calif., they notified authorities with the California Highway Patrol.

CHP arrested and took custody of the driver, a Mexican citizen from Tijuana. CBP cancelled the driver’s Border Crossing Card and terminated his FAST privileges.

The Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program is a Border Accord Initiative between the United States, Mexico, and Canada designed to ensure security and safety of trans-border commercial shipments, while enhancing the economic prosperity of each country.

Eligibility for the FAST program requires participants (carrier, drivers, importers, and southern border manufacturers) to submit an application, agreement, and security profile. The FAST program allows known low risk commercial shipments to receive expedited border processing at cargo ports of entry.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

I just sent several ICE and CBP stories to Senate Immigration Committee members. Here is another good one to send on---the Long Island story would also be a good one for Schumer's office.
