Utah Bill Would Get Rid of Immigrant Driving Cards
Utah Bill Would Get Rid of Immigrant Driving Cards
February 9, 2009
A Utah lawmaker wants to get rid of driving privilege cards for undocumented residents.
Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, says the measure, House Bill 137, isn't meant to punish immigrants, but rather to protect Utahns from national security threats.
The driving cards were created in 2005 and let undocumented residents get auto insurance and drive legally without using false identification. The cards require no proof of citizenship to obtain, but can't be used as official identification.
Tony Yapias, director of Proyecto Latino de Utah, says it's a bad year to get rid of the cards because the state will lose the revenue it gets when the more than 40,000 card holders renew each year.
