NAMPA -- Canyon County commissioners have set aside $100,000 to train sheriff's deputies on federal immigration laws so they can arrest and detain illegal immigrants and help have them deported.

The deputies are to be trained with the help of officials from Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

Commissioner Robert Vasquez is a strident anti-illegal immigration activist and unsuccessful U.S. congressional candidate.

He says having sheriff's deputies do some immigration enforcement could reduce indigent welfare costs the county pays, and reduce crowding in the county jail.
