Immigrants heading to Canada

Published: Sept. 29, 2008 at 12:05 PM TORONTO, Quebec, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A rise in immigration is being cited as the main reason for a 0.38 percent increase in Canada's population during the second quarter of 2008.

The addition of 125,800 residents represents the largest quarterly population growth for Canada since 1991, Statistics Canada reported Monday.

The agency says as of July 1, Canada had a total population of 33,311,400.

Net international migration accounted for 91,600 of the second quarter hike with all provinces and territories reporting a population increase.

The number of non-permanent residents in Canada rose 30,800 from April to June, the highest increase ever for a second quarter, Statistics Canada said.

Fastest growing were the four provinces west of Ontario as well as Prince Edward Island.

Alberta's growth was the highest in the country with an increase of 0.78 percent, more than twice the national level.
