Caravan Migrants Try to Rush Texas Border

REPORT: Caravan Migrants Try to Rush Texas Border

A group of Central American migrants tried to rush one of the international ports of entry from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, into Laredo, Texas. The move forced U.S. authorities to shut down the gateway.

The incident took place at Port of Entry #1 in Nuevo Laredo when a group of about 30 walked to the international bridge and jumped into the vehicle lane in an apparent attempt to cross into Texas and request asylum.

According to Mexican journalists on the ground, the move was met with a show of force from U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers who blockaded the bridge and stopped all traffic until the migrants turned around.

About two hours later, authorities allowed pedestrians with travel documents into Texas, while migrants were asked to leave the area.

The migrants are believed to be Hondurans from the various caravans who still have not been able to request asylum in the U.S. The recent push in Nuevo Laredo comes days after authorities closed a migrant shelter in Piedras Negras that housed approximately 2,000 at its peak.

Laredo is one of the least secure cities on the southwest border and is the main smuggling corridor for the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas. Most of the region lacks man-made barriers, leaving only the shallow waters of the Rio Grande as the obstacle to enter Texas between ports of entry.

Yes, I would support free bus rides back to Honduras just to get them away from our border. My hope is that many of them have learned their lesson!

CBP closes bridge due to possible threat of migrants

    Posted: Mon 2:16 PM, Feb 25, 2019 | Updated: Tue 5:16 AM, Feb 26, 2019

(video may be viewed at source link)

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - On Monday afternoon, U.S. Customs and Border Protection along with Border Patrol agents closed off the Gateway to the Americas Bridge to the traveling public due to a possible influx of migrants seeking asylum.

At around one in the afternoon agents along with local law enforcement responded to the bridge via land, air and water to prevent any possible migrants from crossing.

CBP released a statement saying "Bridge traffic at Gateway to the Americas Bridge is temporarily halted in both directions due to the possible threat of a significant group of undocumented migrants attempting entry without inspection at the bridge.”

Officials with CBP went on to say that it had deployed its mobile field force members as a precautionary measure.

During this time, vehicular traffic had to be diverted to the other two international bridges.

Viewer video shows the moment where 50 asylum seekers left the bridge peacefully without incident.

Meanwhile, commuters who cross the bridge on a daily basis were waiting for officials to re-open the bridge.

Nuevo Laredo officials released a statement saying, “At no given time did the group act aggressive or threatening way to Proteccion Civil Officers, Mexican immigration officers or against U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers. They only asked to be allowed into the U.S. but obviously, without the proper documentation they were denied entry.”

Out of the 50 migrants, 13 started the process of repatriation to go back to their country of origin.

Meanwhile, the rest took a bus to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
