Cartels Use Armed Convoys To Smuggle Drugs in Texas

Cartels Use Convoys To Smuggle Drugs

    Reported by: Farrah Fazal
    Last Update: 11:25 pm

ALAMO - Federal and county authorities say they stopped a four vehicle convoy loaded with drugs and guns.

Investigators say armed men are guarding the drug load, and it could make the job of stopping drug runners even more deadly. The convoy was stopped on FM 509 near San Benito. Agents found more than 566 pounds of marijuana and guns in two trucks, and armed men in two other trucks protecting the load.

Alamo Police Sergent Lupita Valdez says it's a new way to protect the load.

"The person that is escorting has to be prepared to lose their lives to protect that load and the weapons," she says.

Valdez tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS this is why they're training more often with bigger and better weapons.

"We're creating more S.W.A.T. Teams, more active shooter response teams," she says.

Police say it's their way of keeping other drivers on the road safe.

    Alamo, Texas

    From Wikipedia

Alamo, Texas, in what is nicknamed the "Land of Two Summers," is a town in the irrigated area of southern Hidalgo County, Texas. This town was incorporated in 1924, and it was named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company, is 240 miles south of the more famous Texas Alamo Mission, and is near the Mexico-U.S. border. It is located in an area of abundant vegetable farming and citrus groves, and it is a noted winter resort/retirement town. Alamo is also one of the Rio Grande Valley's gateways to Mexico, via U.S. Route 281 and Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas. Alamo's population was just 14,760 at the time of the 2000 U.S. Census. In 2009, the population was 17,526.
