Catholic Diocese of El Paso to open a shelter for undocumented immigrants released by ICE

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — The Catholic Diocese of El Paso is familiar with lending a helping hand. It houses 150 cots, and volunteers Mike Bulko and Eileen Williams will be on the grounds of the diocese to assist migrant families left with no place to go under a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy.

"It's our obligation. It’s what God wanted us to do; to help other people in their time of need,” Bulko said. “We have the resources. We have the talent. We have the resources to help these people."
"This is just something as Catholics we have always done," Bishop Mark Seitz said.

ICE has previously stated the agency is changing its policy when it comes to processing undocumented immigrants seeking asylum. The agency says it doesn't have the resources to house the vast number of immigrants. So, they are being released into communities and being monitored by ICE.

"We believe that this is also a function of government and they should be helping to assure that people aren't left on our streets," Seitz said.

ICE says Congress is to blame. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen stated earlier this month that her office will continue to work with Congress until there's a solution.

"This is an ecumenical effort,” Williams said. "There are people all over this good city volunteering their time and donating items to help care for human beings."

This kind of volunteering is personal for Williams.

"My grandparents came over on a boat from Ireland. That's how they started. My grandfather ended up being a homicide detective in New York City,” Williams said. “He got a chance. Give people a chance. That's what we are known for."
