A Roman Catholic priest at De Smet has been told he must leave the country.

The Rev. Cathal Gallagher is from Ireland and has been a priest in Kingsbury County for more than a decade.

In 2001, the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls applied for Gallagher's permanent residency. It was approved in 2003, but a technical error occurred and he's been told to leave the country by July.

Parishioners are pressing to have the priest's status reconsidered. They plan a prayer service for him Thursday at De Smet.

Erich Schaffhauser is in De Smet and will have more on this story later today on KELOLAND.com and News.
