U.S. Border Patrol announced combined seizures of about 3,000 pounds of marijuana worth more than $2.2 million — all in a span of 24 hours.

The largest seizure took place in Rio Grande City at an underground bunker that agents found by following fresh footprints into a wooded area. The bunker, which had been disguised with plywood with dirt over it, contained almost 1,200 pounds of marijuana.

Another sizable bust took place hours before in McAllen when agents following a dust cloud found a vehicle that had rolled over into an orange grove. As was reported on Wednesday by The Monitor, the driver of the vehicle had been ejected from the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He was later released into the Border Patrol’s custody. Inside the vehicle, the agents found several bundles with 650 pounds of marijuana.

McALLEN — Authorities say they arrested an unidentified man after he led them on a high-speed chase Thursday. Inside his vehicle they found several hundred pounds of marijuana.

The chase began about 4 p.m. when U.S. Border Patrol agents contacted McAllen police to assist in a chase that had begun near the river and was heading north.

More than 15 vehicles from police, DPS and Border Patrol followed the white GMC Yukon until a DPS trooper spiked the tires near Ware Road and Mile 5. The truck came to a stop shortly after, when it drove toward an irrigation canal.

The driver of the vehicle tried to run away and jumped into the irrigation canal but was quickly apprehended, McAllen police Capt. Irene Luna said.

The vehicle that was used in the chase had been reported stolen Wednesday night from the parking lot of Rio Grande Regional Hospital.
