CBP Air and Marine Crews Disrupt Drug Smuggling Attempts Worth $800 MILLION

CBP Air and Marine P-3 Crews Disrupt Drug Smuggling Attempts Worth $800 Million Over Two Weeks

    Release Date:
    June 19, 2015

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Air and Marine agents and interagency partners thwarted a dozen illicit smuggling attempts over a two week period in the western Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean preventing the distribution of more than $824 million in illegal drugs.

The multi-agency operations targeted maritime drug activity occurring in coastal waters along the Central American isthmus with the P-3 aircraft patrolling based at OAM's National Air Security Operations Center in Jacksonville, Florida and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Law enforcement partners seized over 9,640 pounds of cocaine and 4,650 pounds of marijuana during twelve separate incidents between May 28 and June 10.

    - 9,641 pounds of cocaine seized
    - 1,212 pounds of cocaine disrupted
    - 4,650 pounds of marijuana seized
    - 17 arrests (multiple nationalities)
    - 9 vessels seized or scuttled

A CBP P-3 aircrew supporting Operation Martillo detected a suspicious vessel in the waters northwest of Panama City, Panama on June 8. Costa Rican law enforcement personnel intercepted the go-fast boat as suspected drug smugglers began dumping bales of contraband overboard. Costa Rican authorities seized 4,333 pounds of marijuana and arrested four individuals.

A CBP P-3 aircrew tracked a suspicious vessel in open waters near Costa Rica on June 7. Suspected traffickers onboard the vessel began tossing bales into the water and Costa Rican maritime assets responded to intercept. Approximately 1,983 pounds of cocaine and 316 pounds of marijuana were dumped overboard as part of efforts to evade capture.

"Our P-3 crews are exceptionally skilled at detecting maritime drug trafficking and work in a collaborative manner with a number of law enforcement agencies and partner nations," said Director of National Air Security Operations Center - Jacksonville Robert Blanchard.

"We'll continue to detect drug smuggling ventures with vigilance through our vast network of interagency partnerships."

    Operation Martillo
includes the participation of 15 nations that work together to counter transnational organized crime and illicit trafficking in waters along the Central American isthmus. Joint Interagency Task Force South, a National Task Force, oversees the detection and monitoring of illicit traffickers and assists U.S. and multinational law enforcement agencies with the interdiction of these illicit traffickers.

OAM P-3s have been an integral part of the successful counter-narcotic missions operating in coordination with JIATF-South. The P-3s' distinctive detection capabilities allow highly-trained crews to identify emerging threats well beyond the land borders of the U.S. By providing surveillance of known air, land and maritime smuggling routes in an area that is twice the size of the continental U.S., the P-3s detect, monitor and disrupt smuggling activities before they reach shore.

In Fiscal Year 2014, CBP's P-3s operating from Corpus Christi, Texas, and Jacksonville, Florida, flew more than 5,900 hours in support of counternarcotic missions resulting in 135 interdiction events of suspected smuggling vessels and aircraft. These events led to the total seizure or disruption of 126,489 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $9.47 billion.

The mission of the CBP Office of Air and Marine is to serve and protect the American people. OAM applies advanced aeronautical and maritime capabilities and employs a unique skill set to preserve America's security interests.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

If these reports are at all accurate about amounts and street value for those losses to be absorbed it begs the question, "How much illegal drug makes it to market and then the proceeds get back to the shipper??

It must be more than a few hundred tons. If we are losing the drug war, it is probably because we have never adequately enforced the law. As we don't enforce immigration law either, and crossing the border illegally is common to both.

2 TONS OF MARIJUANA SEIZED AT TEXAS INLAND BORDER CHECKPOINT

by BOB PRICE 19 Jun 20154

U.S. Border Patrol Agents discovered more than 4,000 pounds of marijuana on Thursday in a tractor-trailer at the inland border checkpoint located on I-35 between San Antonio and Laredo. Agents were alerted to the possibility of drugs by a K-9 assigned to the checkpoint.

Agents asked the driver to move the rig to a secondary inspection station, according to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) press release obtained by Breitbart Texas.

Using a non-intrusive scanner, agents discovered anomalies in the trailer and began a physical inspection of the contents.

The inspection revealed 380 bundles containing what would later test positive as being marijuana. The bundles were contained in cardboard boxes filled with Styrofoam cups.

The marijuana weighed 4,174.83 pounds. It has an estimated street value of $3,339,864.00. The driver, vehicle, and narcotics were transferred to the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration for investigation.

“This is an indication of the amount of drugs actually being smuggled into the United States,” said Border Patrol Agent Hector Garza, president of the National Border Patrol Council Local 2455, in an interview with Breitbart Texas. “When the agency invests in assets like these highly trained K-9s and handlers, these are the results you will see.”

“The K-9 team is crucial to the checkpoints,” Garza explained. “They literally have seconds to determine if a secondary inspection is needed as the thousands of cars, trucks and buses pass through here every day.”

“This is more than 4,000 pounds of marijuana that the cartels will not be able to deliver to the streets,” he concluded. “Our hard working Border Patrol agents put their lives on the line every day and night to stop these drugs and their smugglers.”

The North Laredo checkpoint is currently located 29 miles north of Laredo, Texas. The 15-acre complex includes facilities to process all automobiles, semi-tractor trailers and other commercial vehicles like busses and travel vans. It also includes a 5,000 square foot administration building that houses a processing area, a sally port, offices and detention facilities.

In addition to traffic through the checkpoint, the agents assigned to this station also cover about 430 square miles, including 30 miles of river border along the Rio Grande River.

With this loss and legal marijuana in three states they absorb these losses and keep shipping. Sell, so much for taxed legal marijuana would be so cheap it would put illegal Mary Jane out o f business. What proof do w need that politicians do not have a clue what they talk about! So, I have to proffer just a guess that at least 12,000 lbs. somehow and some way made it to the USA.

The illegal drug trade is over $300 billion a year in sales, at least, because as of a few years ago a report by a Congressional committee revealed that over $240 billion a year of illegal drug sold in the US comes across the Southern Border alone. The name of that report was The Southwest Border: A Line In the Sand. 70% of the items were marijuana and 30% cocaine with some small amount of heroine, because most heroine comes in through the ports or in other ways from other parts of the world. I don't think the report discussed meth at that time, but meth is now coming in as well I guess. At that time, I think most of the meth was produced here in the states.

The illegal drug trade is a huge enterprise, larger than $300 billion by now. That report was at least 7 years ago and drug sales grow every year with the population. The states that have legalized marijuana will be tapping into that to some degree for the medical marijuana and to a lesser degree the recreational marijuana because for now there are fewer states that have legalized recreational pot. As more states legalize, then more pot will be produced and sold here which will start to put a big dent in this illegal drug trade since 70% of it is marijuana, at least coming in over the Southern Border.
