CBP Arrests Seven Undocumented Aliens After Landing Ashore

A former Super Bantam weight-boxing champion among those arrested and prosecuted

    (Monday, June 20, 2011)

Aguadilla, Puerto Rico – After an extensive search, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested seven undocumented citizens of the Dominican Republic and two U.S. citizens this weekend. Five of the seven aliens will be prosecuted for re-entering the country after a prior removal and will appear before a U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Camille Velez-Rive tomorrow.

After a citizen called the Ramey Sector Border Patrol Station, agents were deployed to an Aguadilla ward where they found an individual who claimed to be a citizen of the Dominican Republic. The alien identified himself as Julio Antonio Gervacio-Lynch, 44, a former Super Bantam weight-boxing champion. Gervacio-Lynch admitted that he had arrived earlier along with an unspecified group of aliens to Martinica Beach in the northwestern coast of the island.

Border Patrol agents continued an extensive search throughout the coast and the urban areas of Aguadilla, arresting six additional undocumented aliens (four males, two females) and two U.S. citizens who were attempting to harbor and transport the aliens to the San Juan metro area.

Felix Torres-Ramos, U.S. citizen, was charged with transporting aliens. Pablo Sanatiago-Sanabria, U.S. citizen, was prosecuted for harboring aliens in an abandoned house. Both defendants appeared last Friday before a U.S. District Court judge.

Defendants Manuel Mejias-Soto, Angel Baez, Franklin Licen and Bolivar Mejia will be prosecuted for re-entering at a place not designated by immigration officers, a misdemeanor. Carlos Nunez and Julio Gervacio -Lynch will be prosecuted for re-entering the U.S. after a previous deportation.

Criminal and immigration records revealed that Gervacio-Lynch was convicted by a New York court in 2002 for conspiracy to distribute narcotics and was ordered removed by an immigration judge in 2009. Public records revealed that Gervacio-Lynch was a successful amateur boxer who started his professional boxing career in 1985, becoming a world champion in 1987 after beating Louie Espinoza in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He retired in 1997.

Border Patrol presented the case to the immigration unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico for prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney Evelyn Canals will prosecute the case.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
