CBP Officers Intercept 57 Pounds of Cocaine at Calexico Port this Weekend
(Monday, August 17, 2009)
Calexico, Calif. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Calexico downtown port over the weekend seized cocaine worth $513,000, officials announced today.
The interception occurred on Sunday, August 16, at about 12:45 a.m., when CBP officers arrested a 36-year-old male Mexican citizen after discovering 25 wrapped packages of cocaine concealed inside the rear seat and passenger doors of a 2002 GMC Envoy vehicle he was driving.
Officers conducted an intensive inspection of the Envoy that led to the discovery of 57 pounds of cocaine.
The driver, a permanent resident of El Centro, Calif., was turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who then transported him to the Imperial County jail to await arraignment.
CBP placed an immigration hold on the driver to initiate removal from the United States at the conclusion of his criminal proceedings. CBP officers seized the vehicle and cocaine.
