CBP Officers Seize $5M Worth of Drugs, Arrest Eight on Outstanding Warrants

    (Tuesday, June 29, 2010)

San Luis, Ariz. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Luis Port of Entry arrested 14 people over the previous week on various charges.

On Friday, a 35-year-old man was arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the United States. CBP officers found the cocaine hidden in the rocker panels of a BMW after a service canine alerted to the area. A total of 48 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated value of $2,165,000, was recovered. The man was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A second seizure and arrest occurred June 24 when CBP officers discovered a 16-year-old had a package of cocaine taped to his leg. Officers arrested him and turned him over to ICE for processing. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $60,000.

CBP officers also seized four marijuana loads, totaling close to 300 pounds, with estimated value of $2,669,000, over the last week.

Eight people were also arrested for various outstanding warrants including one man who turned himself into the CBP officers. The arrests stemmed from charges including absconding while on parole, suspended drivers license, failure to appear, contempt of court, and dangerous drugs.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
