CBP seize marijuana, assault rifles at international bridges

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made two separate seizures last weekend at the international bridges in Brownsville according to an agency press release.

On Friday, CBP officers at the Gateway International Bridge encountered a blue 2001 Chevrolet Venture driven by a 20-year-old Mexican man, the release stated.

When the driver was referred for secondary inspection, officers found 27 bundles of what appeared to be marijuana hidden in the vehicle, the release stated. The packages had a combined weight of 75.8 pounds, which for marijuana would mean an estimated street value of approximately $75,800.

The man was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security investigations special agents for further investigation, the release said. CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle.

In the second case, CBP officers and Border Patrol agents working outbound enforcement operations at the B&M International Bridge encountered a white Dodge Dakota truck as it attempted to exit the U.S. to enter Mexico, the release stated.

The driver, identified as a 28-year-old male Mexican citizen and resident of Matamoros, was referred for secondary inspection, the release stated. Authorities discovered 27 AR-15 magazines and one AR-15 quad rail handguard hidden in the truck, according to the release.

The driver was taken into custody and turned over to ICE-HSI special agents for further investigation.
