May 14, 2008--The company involved in the largest immigration raid in U.S. history, may be coming under fire for more than just hiring illegal workers. According to the federal affidavit used to get a search warrant at Agriprocessors, Inc. in Postville, prosecutors say immigrants unable to prove they were in the U.S. legally, were hired and paid $5 per hour.

After three or four months the wage was raised to $6 an hour, but that's still below the federal minimum wage. Also during the final six months of last year, 737 Agriprocessors employees were found to be using Social Security numbers not issued to them.

The affidavit goes on to say Agriprocessors management was involved in hiring and harboring illegal immigrants, document fraud and misuse of Social Security numbers.

Iowa Workforce Development and the Department of Labor are also investigating Agriprocessors. Details are not being released until the investigation is complete but the accusations surround violations of child labor laws.
