April 3, 2006 -- On Wednesday the Southwest Border Sheriff's Coalition will meet with Texas senators in Washington to discuss the border's future. "If those that are supposed to protect the laws are in danger than what about those that they are trying to protect, they're in danger as well," says El Paso County Sheriff's spokesperson Rick Glancey.

On Jan. 22, Hudspeth County sheriff's deputies put their life in danger while pursuing drug smugglers. A week after that, another incursion.

"There are some issues that face local law enforcement especially in the rural areas the southwest United States and those have to be accounted for," says Glancey.

That's why the recently formed Southwest Border Sheriff's Coalition pressed for a meeting with senators. They hope to see some amendments passed. "There appears to be some grave concern that in all of this debate in the Senate that perhaps we're losing site of the fact that border security should be one of the priority issues," said Glancey.

Texas Rep. Michael McCaul and U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, of New Mexico, will attend Wednesday's meeting.
