Making good citizens of illegal migrants

When U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl visited The Arizona Republic Editorial Board recently, the focus understandably was on the immigration reform bill.

It's the hot topic.

Kyl, one of the architects of the bill, said he knew he would take some heat from his constituent base, conservative Republicans. He just had no idea it would be so . . . well, searing.

I think he's being kind. Anyone who has discussed illegal immigration over the past few years knows how nasty things can get - a virtual white-hot poker to the eye.

Emotions run high, including among certain anti-immigrant extremists who want the government to load up every man, woman and child (whether that child was born in the United States or not) without documents and ship them back to Mexico in cattle cars. That engine is powered by racism and rides the parallel rails of hate and ignorance. Such politics go nowhere.

I asked the senator, who explained he was more interested in getting something done than Congress continuing to do nothing on immigration reform, if vile sentiments would simmer down should his bipartisan legislation pass.

Kyl said that is his hope and his expectation.

"This is a way to let the people who are here illegally to start over and do it our way this time," he said. "Granted, we've giving them a big benefit and (one that) a lot people don't think they deserve.

"But if they do everything we ask of them, if they decide to become citizens, by the time they get to that point, you're going to have to acknowledge that they did everything that we would ask any other immigrant to do. The only problem is that when they first came in, they came here illegally or they overstayed a visa.

"And so they should make a good citizen at that point. I think over time this will have a healing effect."

This nation has so many open wounds and scabs, a little healing could go a long way toward our overall health as a nation of immigrants. After all, if we remove the word "illegal" from in front of "immigrant," then we no longer have a "criminal."

Instead we will have, as Kyl predicts, "a good citizen": an immigrant who has come here to work hard for a better life and freedom.

What is more American than that? I mean other than, historically speaking, our misguided missteps along the way before we eventually realize such a simple truth.

With all due respect to the Senator, that's just about the most naive thing I've ever heard. First, these folks don't want to start over. They want to jump into the middle, crash the line so to speak. Secondly, they've proven themselves scofflaws by breaking in, stealing SSNs, committing identity fraud and on and on. Thirdly, they absolutely won't do what's asked of them 'cuz they have no reason to comply. Finally, we're never gonna' know whether they're good citizens or not 'cuz we don't even know who they are and they're never gonna' tell us. When this bill passes, law enforcement will stop as Congress and industry have it rigged. And NEWSFLASH to Mr. Kyl, I'm not naive and simply don't trust him or any member of congress anymore. Once the border is closed, we can talk but not 'til then. Passage of this bill probably spells the end of the GOP and perhaps conservative influence in this nation altogether.

You are not capable of holding office!!

Whether you remove illegal from "illegal immigrant" or not!! They are who they are...THEY BROKE INTO OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY!!!!
Anything short of them having to leave the country either through attriton thru enforcement or deportation...IS AMNESTY!!! Start getting your mind ready for this one... as Donald Trumph says so well "YOU'RE FIRED!!"

Your remarks to the Arizona Republic were misquoted. Or, at least I assume they were. The paper states you saying:

If this is correct you are more of a lost soul that I feared.

Since the legalization of CRIMINALS you propose is going to cost the tax payers TRILLIONS of dollars, shouldn’t cuts be made? I suggest we start with things that affect YOU since YOU are the one wanting to accept this burden.

I wonder if he saw the nightly news Saturday night. Crime is up dramatically nationwide. Some of the cities mentioned were Los Angeles and San Bernadino. Also Santa Ana Calif is under siege with gangs. Yeah Senator Mexical gangs. All of these areas are where the illegals invaded, pure and simple. And they want to grant amnesty. Go figure. We need to pound them with these statistics. By the way these are the anchor babies of the last amnesty I'm sure.

Senator, you have declared war on the Middle Class and are acting like you are confused about the outrage.

This is sooooo sad to me. I was born and raised in San Bernardino, CA.

I left because I could see the gangs growing!! This administration and even most of this congress have ABSOLUTELY LOST THEIR MINDS!!!

After all, if we remove the word "illegal" from in front of "immigrant," then we no longer have a "criminal."

So, we can eliminate all crime, from now on, by simply legalizing anything criminal.

What wonderful, wise people. They will now say and do anything to try to justify their treason.
