Chicago to celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Skyline to catch the glow of Mexico's independence

    August 31, 2006

CHICAGO -- Several prominent downtown Chicago buildings will be bathed in red, white and green lights in September to celebrate Mexico's independence, community leaders announced Wednesday.

The effort, organized by the Mexican Consulate, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn and radio host Javier Salas, will run from Sept. 12-17. The city plans to light several downtown bridges in Mexico's national colors.

At least 20 buildings and landmarks will participate, including Navy Pier, Sears Tower and the Wrigley Building, according to a spokeswoman for Quinn.

The "skyline tribute," as organizers call it, began last year to mark the Sept. 16 Mexican national holiday.

Were those Chicago buildings bathed in red, white and blue lights in July to celebrate America's independence? I don't think so. There's something terribly wrong with this picture.

At a time when national passions are heated about illegal aliens from Mexico, the city of Chicago and state of Illinois are promoting an event to honor Mexican independence.

The celebration, called the "2nd Annual Mexican Independence Skyline Tribute," will feature prominent buildings throughout the Windy City being bathed in Mexico's national colors of red, white and green for six days beginning next Tuesday, Sept. 12.

It's receiving heavy promotion from organizers including Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, D-Ill., the Mexican Consulate and Univision radio host Javier Salas.

"The tribute recognizes the important role that Mexican-Americans have played in Chicago over the last century, from the early days of the railroad and stockyard industries through the steel mill boom to the present," a website promoting the tribute states. "Today, an estimated 550,000 Mexican-Americans live in the Chicago area."

At least 20 businesses and landmarks are slated to participate. Buildings including Sears Tower and the Wrigley Building will be illuminated with red and green lights, while other buildings and locations will spell out messages such as "VIVA VIVA."

The event began last year to mark the Sept. 16 Mexican national holiday.

    This is insanity.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

You've got to be kidding me. I guess if Chicago wants to show support for amnesty and open borders, this will do it!

Has anyone heard if anti-illegal immigration protesters will be there?

People, this has gone way beyond too far. How long will it take before millions of American's start paying attention and demand this nonsense be stopped?

Is this over the top or what? Is this the United States of America anymore? How do you think the citizens of the city will feel when the colors of the Mexican flag glow across the skies? Would burn me up, that's for sure. Hope it helps to wake up people as to what is happening to our country.
