A young father was killed Thursday night two blocks from his Northwest Side home when someone pulled a gun during a gang-related argument outside a Walgreens store, police said.
Epifanio Santos, 22, was shot in the head shortly before 8 p.m. in the 4200 block of West Armitage Avenue, in the city's Hermosa neighborhood, police said.
Santos, of the 1800 block of North Keeler Avenue, died at the scene. Family members said the Kelvyn Park High School graduate was trying to turn his life around for his 18-month-old son.
More than a dozen men beat Santos before someone fired a handgun, said Ida Rodriguez, Santos' aunt. His family gave police a cell phone they found lying at the scene, she said.
Police said the suspects fled after the shooting, but detectives apprehended several people believed to be involved and questioned them Friday morning, police said. No charges had been filed Friday evening.
"He grew up in this area and everyone knew him," Rodriguez said of her nephew. "The neighborhood kids considered him a big brother."
Two other men died in separate Chicago shootings Friday.
Anthony Bryant, 26, of the 6100 block of South Fairfield Avenue, was killed several blocks from his home on the Southwest Side after a dispute with the driver of a red sport-utility vehicle, police said.
Bryant was standing in the 6300 block of South Whipple Street about 3:15 a.m. when the driver of the SUV opened fire, police said. There were one or two other men in the vehicle.
Bryant had been released on parole this month after serving time for car theft charges in 2005.
A 46-year-old man was slain in an afternoon drive-by shooting on the Far South Side, police said.
Police responded to a call at 1:19 p.m. of an injured man in the 300 block of East 134th Street, said Police Officer Marcel Bright. The victim had been shot several times, Bright said, and when police arrived, they found his body on the sidewalk.
