China Demands Apology From CNN's Cafferty

Jack Cafferty set off a firestorm in China after his remarks (seen here) that the the nation is full of "goons and thugs" and that their exports are "junk." The Chinese government demanded that CNN apologize, which they did (lukewarmly), but the apology was apparently not enough for some Chinese citizens.

Reuters reports that CNN is now being sued by two Chinese citizens for $1.3 billion, or one dollar per Chinese citzen:

A Chinese primary school teacher and a beautician have filed a suit against CNN in New York over remarks they say insulted the Chinese people and are seeking $1.3 billion in compensation -- $1 per person in China, a Hong Kong newspaper reported.

The case against the Atlanta-based cable channel, its parent company Turner Broadcasting and Jack Cafferty, the offending commentator, comes after 14 lawyers launched a similar suit in Beijing alleging that Cafferty's remarks earlier this month violated the dignity and reputation of the Chinese people....

In New York, Liang Shubing, the beautician, and Li Lilan, a Beijing-based elementary school instructor, claimed Cafferty's words insulted all Chinese people and "intentionally caused mental harm" to the plaintiffs, the Ta Kung Pao newspaper reported on Thursday.

Just another case of a particular ethnic group looking for a shakedown. The constitution does not protect anyone's right to agree or like what someone says, just that persons right to right to say it. Why does it seem that certain groups are always forgetting this fact. They should make the US Constitution required reading for anyone who wishes to become a US Citizen.

In addition, Jack was speaking in order to protect a common interest that he has along with the American People in regards to China. That interest is self preservation from the overwhelming, tyrannical trade imbalance this country has with China.

By the way, the truth is an absolute defense in such a case...

Hell no. He shouldn't apologize for anything. The truth hurts. China should quit trying to kill our animals, poision our children and place higher standards on their imports to this country on medicines. They do make crap. Evidently, they don't know about freee speech and if they are that insulted, tell their government to clean up their act. I hope they lose this case, as they should.

I'll contact the ACLU to tell them they have a client in China. They will be elated!

These two Chinese have just tried practicing a traditional American custom the frivolous niusance suit.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
