Bath, N.Y. —
A 20-year-old Chinese woman was taken into custody Tuesday in Bath after police determined her student visa had been revoked.
Ailing Zheng was riding in a minivan Tuesday night in Bath when a Steuben County sheriff’s deputy stopped the vehicle for operating without headlights after dark.
The deputy ticketed the driver, 39-year-old Jin X. Zheng of New York City, for driving without headlights and operating without a license.
During the stop, police contacted the U.S. Border Patrol, which asked deputies to detain Ailing Zheng and another woman in the vehicle. ?After an investigation, authorities determined Ailing Zheng’s student visa had been terminated due to failure to maintain attendance in college, police said. She was taken into custody by the Border Patrol.
The second woman was released after it was determined she was in the country legally.
