Christian Group Files Request for Pictures of Border Patrol Agent's Beating

(CNSNews.com) - A Christian group has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Federal Bureau of Prisons to have the photographs of the beating of Border Patrol Agent Ignacio Ramos released to the public.

As Cybercast News Service reported, Ramos and fellow Border Patrol Agent Jose Compean were sentenced to 11 and 12 years, respectively, for shooting a suspected drug smuggler.

"I believe once the photographs of this disgusting event are released, the anger that is growing among the American people about this case will reach a boiling point," said Rev. Don Swarthout, president of Christians Reviving America's Values (CRAVE).

"And President Bush will have no choice but to pardon Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean," Swarthout added.

Ramos was severely beaten while sleeping in his Mississippi prison as several illegal aliens reportedly shouted, "Kill the Border Patrol agent." Swarthout also asked for any and all reports relating to Ramos' beating, which occurred on Feb. 3.

The case sparked outrage among lawmakers, who called on the Bush administration to pardon the agents and criticized U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton for not only prosecuting the two, but also for offering the illegal alien immunity in return for testimony against the agents.

Swarthout wondered if Bush has seen the pictures of Ramos' beating and plans to make sure he does. "Hopefully, then he will understand that the Justice Department's policy of waiting five years to consider a pardon is totally unacceptable - and indeed immoral in these circumstances," he said.

"Border Patrol Agent Ramos is a Christian family man. Christians Reviving America's Values has made the pardon of Agents Ramos and Compean a top priority. We expect to deliver over 25,000 petitions to the White House in the next 90 days supporting a pardon for Ramos and Compean," Swarthout added.

"I appeal to President Bush to exercise his Christian principles and to forgive these men before they serve another day in jail," he said.

"It was completely unfair for the prosecutor to grant immunity to a known drug smuggler to testify against these two men who were trying to arrest him for smuggling 743 pounds of marijuana into our nation," Swarthout said, calling on Bush to "correct this injustice by immediately pardoning" Ramos and Compean.
