Border Patrol Stops Suspected Smuggling Vehicle

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Nine suspected illegal immigrants were detained after the van they were in crashed in a South Bay residential neighborhood as they attempted to elude the U.S. Border Patrol Monday morning, authorities reported.
A Border Patrol officer tried to pull over the vehicle on State Route 125 near Birch Road in Chula Vista shortly after 7:30 a.m., USBP public affairs Agent Jerry Conlin said.
The driver of the white late-model Chevrolet van -- which matched the description of one suspected undocumented immigrants had boarded near Otay Mesa Port of Entry a few minutes earlier -- refused to yield. The driver headed north for several miles before exiting at Otay Lakes Road and heading east, Conlin said.
A short distance away, the driver took a sharp left turn at a controlled intersection and made a full 360-degree circuit in the roadway, then continued speeding to the east. At that point, the pursuing personnel called off the chase for safety reasons.
A short time later, agents spotted the van again on Eastlake Parkway, where it had veered off the roadway, struck a stop sign and crashed to halt in a patch of shrubbery, Conlin said. Seven suspected illegal immigrants were taken into custody at the scene.
Two other Mexican nationals -- the suspected leaders of the human-smuggling attempt -- were arrested nearby, one found hiding in a shed and the other detained by an off-duty police officer who happened to be in the area.
No injuries were reported.
