In church -- but in the country illegally

" 40 percent of all the Southern Baptist Hispanics in America are undocumented . ."
NASHVILLE, TN - A Southern Baptist Convention leader says a large portion of Hispanics who attend SBC churches are in the country illegally.

Dr. Richard Land heads the SBC's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. "I'm told by the Hispanic community that perhaps 40 percent of all the Southern Baptist Hispanics in America are undocumented -- which shouldn't surprise us," he says. "I mean, they come here to work, and we aggressively evangelize and they find Jesus as their Savior."

Land also stated the denomination's policy supports a "clean" version of the so-called "DREAM Act," a proposed law that would let illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children earn legal status, either by going to college or serving in the military.

In a letter last week to U.S. Senators Charles Schumer of New York and John Cornyn of Texas, both of whom serve on the Senate's subcommittee on immigration, Land wrote that his commission could support the DREAM Act, with conditions. They include a provision that would preclude young adults granted legal status from using it to sponsor their relatives to gain legal status or enter the country.

"That would be back-door amnesty," states Land.
