Man Burns Baby Boy
In June of 2005, New York police picked up 26-year-old Hugo Linares Lopez for brutally burning his girlfriend's eighteen-month-old baby boy. But a Stapleton Criminal Court judge ordered Hugo Lopez released on his own recognizance because prosecutors failed to indict him within the time prescribed by law. Then, cops say Lopez took advantage of his freedom and took off.

According to officials, Lopez was home alone with the young boy on May 31, 2005 when the eighteen-month-old was burned. Then, Lopez called 911, saying the child had been hurt and needed medical attention. At the hospital, Lopez told doctors the young toddler was playing in the kitchen sink when the phone rang. Cops say Lopez told them he went to answer the phone and left the child alone in the sink for a few minutes and that's when the child burned himself.

Apparent History of Abuse Revealed
When cops started their investigation, they immediately took action. Investigators called to the Regional Burn Center of Staten Island University Hospital found the little boy in critical condition with injuries inconsistent with an accident and most likely caused by immersion in hot water, according to court documents. The eighteen-month-old had burns on over 40 percent of his body, and cops say doctors noticed old scarring, suggesting more evidence of abuse.

Police arrested and charged Lopez with endangering the welfare of a child, assault and reckless endangerment, but when he was released, pending trial, cops say he took off.
