Citizen of Mexico pleads guilty to illegal re-entry in Florence

COLUMBIA, S.C. --

COLUMBIA – A citizen of Mexico pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry in federal court recently in Florence.

Alonso Perez-Trujillo, 23, of Myrtle Beach, pleaded guilty Nov. 20 to illegal re-entry, a violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a)(2).

United States District Judge Terry L. Wooten of accepted the plea and will impose sentence after he has reviewed the presentence report which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that Perez-Trujillo was a citizen of Mexico and was removed from the United States on July 6, 2010, as an illegal alien. On Aug. 21, 2011, Perez-Trujillo was arrested by ICE agents who were investigating drug activity in the Myrtle Beach area. ICE records revealed That Perez-Trujillo did not have permission to reenter the United States.

Nettles stated the maximum penalty Perez-Trujillo can receive is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for 2 years, plus a special assessment of $100.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents. Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day, II, of the Florence office handled the case.
