High-speed chase suspect eludes officials

A high-speed chase through the center of Del Rio ended when the suspect fled successfully into Mexico, local law enforcement officials said.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper II Sylvia Alaniz told the Del Rio News-Herald that she initiated the pursuit when she tried to stop a truck approximately two miles outside the city limits on U.S. Highway 90 for a routine traffic stop Saturday morning.

The vehicle refused to pull over, and the pursuit began.

Alaniz did not confirm the speeds attained during the pursuit. The suspect vehicle fled into Mexico after slamming into a barrier at the toll plaza and sideswiping a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle, damaging its grill guard.

Del Rio Police Department Capt. Bill Rattay said Monday the DRPD received a request for assistance from the DPS in the pursuit.

“The vehicle apparently refused to stop as they were coming in from the area of the lake, so we cleared the intersections in town along Veterans Boulevard, beginning at Cantu Road, all the way to the port of entry,â€
