Clayton crash prompts inquiry on illegal immigrants owning cars

(KMOV) - One person remains hospitalized after being hit by an SUV while dining outside at a Clayton restaurant.

News 4 learned more about the driver, who police say is in this country illegally.

Tuesday's accident is not the first time that Sergio Lopez Luna has had trouble with a left hand turn.

News 4 called the Illinois Secretary of State's office to inquire how an undocumented immigrant could legally own a car.

News 4 learned all you need to register a car in Illinois is proof of insurance and the title.

It is not necessary have a driver's license, or be a U.S. citizen.

News 4 also checked the history of that car, and found it had been involved in an accident last July.

Turns out, Lopez Luna was driving the SUV, again without a license or proof of insurance, when he hit Eleanor Sanford on Kingshighway.
