Clinton and Obama, McCain and Romney Tied in California Poll

By Nadine Elsibai

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The leading Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are locked in close races in California, the state with the most delegates at stake in today's primaries and caucuses, an American Research Group, Inc. poll shows.

New York Senator Hillary Clinton leads Illinois Senator Barack Obama 49 percent to 45 percent among the state's Democrats, a spread equal to the poll's margin of error. Among Republicans, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney had 37 percent support and Arizona Senator John McCain received 35 percent. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was backed by 14 percent of Republicans.

The telephone surveys of 600 likely voters in each party were conducted Feb. 3-4 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

California, the most populous state, today awards 370 delegates in the Democratic race and 170 in the Republican contest.

Obama has been gaining on Clinton's lead there: In the group's Feb. 1-2 poll, Clinton led by 47 percent to 39 percent.

The latest Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby tracking poll conducted Feb. 3-4 showed Obama leading Clinton by 13 points, 49 percent to 36 percent; a SurveyUSA poll at the same time showed Clinton up by 10 points, 52 percent to 42 percent.
