Bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship to purchase a gun in Colorado

Denver, CO Colorado

DENVER, Colorado — A House committee has approved an amended bill that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to purchase a gun in Colorado.

Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Grand Junction, said the original bill would allow gun owners to use their concealed weapons permits as sufficient identification for buying a gun.

Opponents said Colorado's background checks for gun buyers are out of line with federal law and have to be fixed first. They approved changes to require buyers to provide proof of citizenship, just as federal law does.

The House Judiciary Committee approved the amended bill and sent it to the full House for debate.
