Character assassination of Goldwater is exactly right. Goldwater was wrong to oppose the US Civil Rights Act, but he did so based on the advice of a Constitutional attorney who thought the Supreme Court would over-turn it because of one provision pertaining to private businesses.

Goldwater was a civil rights activist, who strongly supported civil rights for black Americans, a fact completely lost because of his position on the US Civil Rights Act.

Barry Goldwater had integrated his family's furniture business in Arizona and had fought for and succeeded in integrating the Phoenix Public School System and the Arizona National Guard years earlier, facts never reported by the Press and not known by most voters.

Barry Goldwater who was by far the better candidate overall for President basically lost the 1964 election because he took the erroneous advice of a lawyer on the "constitutionality" of one provision of the US Civil Rights Act, legislation Barry actually supported but who didn't want yet another anti-civil rights ruling by the US Supreme Court on the record.
