CNN: Haitians Self-Deporting to Canada After Trump Ends ‘Temporary’ Amnesty

by John Binder 24 Aug 2026Haitian migrants are self-deporting to Canada after President Donald Trump’s administration ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, with approval from the Supreme Court, CNN reports.
In June, the Supreme Court gave the Trump administration the green light to end TPS for Haitian migrants living in the United States, a status that was awarded to them following an earthquake that hit the Caribbean country more than 15 years ago.
Now, reports indicate that Haitians are self-deporting from the U.S. so that they do not end up deported to their native country. Canada, CNN reports, is among the top destinations for Haitians looking to relocate outside the U.S.
CNN details:
It was a journey many Haitians like Cadet have made. During the first Trump administration, a road from upstate New York to Montreal became a well-known crossing point. But since then, the rules have changed significantly, and it’s much harder to make asylum claims at Canada’s border.
Still, some are trying — including Haitians whose deportation protections in the U.S. have been revoked.
“Some people… knowing fully well all the risks and all the troubles, they’re like, ‘I will give it a shot, and I will try, because I have nothing else, and I cannot go back to Haiti,’” says Fedora Mathieu, an immigration and refugee lawyer in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, whose office has fielded a growing number of calls from Haitians in the U.S.

Haitians top the list of nationalities requesting asylum at ports of entry along the Canada-U.S. border, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. [Emphasis added throughout.]
Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents announced that they had begun repatriating Haitian migrants to Haiti. The first deportation flight repatriated more than 160 Haitians.
On Monday, ICE agents noted that the Haitian deportees included those convicted of child sex crimes, human smuggling, and assault, as well as gang members.
