By Herald Staff

NORTH CAPE MAY — On May 3 at approximately 9 a.m., Lower Township Police responded to a report of a man assaulting a woman in front of the Sturdy Savings Bank at Bayshore and Ferry roads.

Upon arrival, police discovered that Nicholas Gallachio, an off duty Cape May Police Officer, had witnessed a possible robbery and assault on the bank’s front lawn.

Gallachio subdued the aggressor and contained him until township police arrived.

Investigation revealed that Samuel Gonzalez, 39, forced his estranged wife to the ground in an attempt to gain control of approximately $3,000 she had just withdrawn from the bank.

Once Gallachio intervened, the woman ran from the scene, but was later located by police unharmed.

Further investigation revealed that Gonzalez, of Ventnor, was an illegal alien and police advised Immigration officials of his status.

Gonzalez was charged with robbery and assault. He was lodged in county jail on $50,000 cash bail.
