CO: Bill Asking Citizenship Proof To Vote Gets OK
Bill Asking Citizenship Proof To Vote Gets OK
Bill Would See If Registered Voters Are U.S. Citizens

DENVER, CO
A Republican proposal to prevent people from voting if they can't prove they're U.S. citizens got approval from a GOP-controlled House committee.
The bill approved Thursday requires the secretary of state's office to compare voter rolls with state and federal records to determine whether registered voters are actually U.S. citizens.
The government would send a letter to people asking them to show proof of citizenship within 90 days if there is any doubt about their ability to vote. People would be unable to vote if they do not comply.
Democrats opposed the bill and said it could inadvertently put a burden on U.S. citizens to prove their right to vote.
Republicans say the bill is absolutely necessary to prevent any voter fraud.
