FREMONT, Neb. - Federal immigration agents have stepped up efforts in Fremont since the debate over a controversial City Council proposal that would have punished those who rented to or hired illegal immigrants, local leaders said Wednesday.

"We’ve had a lot more contact with their field agents," Doug Campbell, Dodge County Director of Correction, said of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"They’ve been coming up and talking to us in person, reassuring us that if we need anything they’re there and available," Campbell said.

County Attorney Paul Vaughan said ICE has placed more federal "holds" on illegal immigrants serving time for previous criminal acts.
