UPDATED: 12:13 pm EDT April 23, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An illegal immigrant faces multiple charges after police say he hit and killed a pedestrian in east Charlotte and then left the scene.
Luciano Melendres, 30, is charged with felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, driving without liability insurance and driving with fictitious tags.
Officers say Melendres hit and killed a man crossing Albemarle Road near Farm Pond Lane around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They say he fled the scene in a green Ford Expedition, but police found him and the sport utility vehicle a short time later.
Authorities have not identified the victim.
Melendres has prior DWI charges. He was arrested in March 2006 for driving while impaired and driving without a license.
Melendres has his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Geez....maybe if these illegals wouldn't spend so much money on booze, they could afford to support their families better
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

First DWI, now fatal hit-and-run

A 30-year-old Charlotte man who was arrested last year for DWI is in jail this morning, charged with the fatal hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian Sunday night.
The collision happened about 9:45 p.m. on Albemarle Road near Farm Pond Lane, in east Charlotte. Police have charged Luciano Melendres with felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, driving without liability insurance. And driving with fictitious tags. He is being held on $5,000 bail in a Mecklenburg County jail.
Police have not released the identity of the victim, whom they say was a black male.
This is the second bout with the law in a little more than a year for Melendres.
In March 2006, he was arrested for DWI and several other charges. Law enforcement records show that case had not been decided yet in court.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

MADD has suddenly (or maybe I didn't look for a while) become
PC. Look at their website. They've become all about education
& no consequences.

Man charged with
DWI, hit-and-run
DÁNICA COTO
Luciano Melendres drove to a friend's house Sunday night minutes after he fatally struck a pedestrian, police said, then he denied involvement when questioned.
Authorities said they found Melendres there thanks to a witness who saw the accident. She followed the driver and alerted police to his location, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg detective Charlie Brown.
The victim, Dacus Lamont Sims, 32, was trying to cross the street near Albemarle Road and Farm Pond Lane, police said.
Police charged Melendres, 30, with DWI, felony hit-and-run, driving with a license revoked, not having insurance, and a registration violation.
It's the second time Melendres, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, has been charged with driving drunk. Last week, he was convicted of DWI stemming from an arrest in March 2006.
His six-month sentence was suspended and he received a 12-month probation, according to court records.
At the time of Melendres' arrest last year, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office hadn't begun screening foreign-born detainees to determine their legal status, so Melendres was released from jail.
From April to November last year, more than 900 illegal immigrants were identified as part of the new screening program. The most common charge was DWI, with more than 190 counts. Traffic violations, with 176 counts, were a close second, according to the Sheriff's Office.
In recent years, there have been several high-profile fatal accidents involving Latino suspects accused of drunken driving. After one wreck in which a Mount Holly teacher died, U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., introduced legislation that would mean automatic deportation for illegal immigrants charged with DWI.
It's unclear how long Melendres lived in the U.S., or whether he had any previous federal immigration charges.
Melendres, whom acquaintances described as quiet and friendly, had been living in an apartment complex off Yateswood Drive in east Charlotte for about a year.
He lived with at least four roommates, all of whom worked in construction, said Eric Smith, 21, whose family lives below Melendres' apartment.
Sims' family couldn't be reached for comment Monday, nor could Melendres' family or his roommates.

If Mecklenberg had started 287g sooner, Mr. Sims would be alive today.
