Coalition Asks House To Drop Immigration Reform

Coalition Asks House To Drop Immigration Reform

    March 26, 2007 09:45 PM EST

Members of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund asked Texas House members to leave immigration reform to the feds Monday.

"We have definite concerns about the pre-emption and constitutional matters and the ability of states to wrongfully enforce federal immigration laws," said Luis Figueroa of MALDEF.

The appeal comes in advance of Wednesday's House committee hearing to address immigration and border security issues.

This is sounding like a broken record! They want to silence the states so Congress can't say they superceded what the people want. It's an attempt to usurp our rule of law!

Advocates take immigration legislation concerns to Capitol

A coalition of civil rights and business groups issued a list of 15 principles they believe lawmakers should keep in mind as they discuss legislation related to immigration and border security.

Texas Residents United for a Stronger Texas (TRUST) said the Legislature should reject bills that would require local law enforcement officers, state agencies or municipalities to enforce complex immigration laws.

The group also said lawmakers should support bilingual education and access to health care for all Texans.

TRUST says businesses and property owners should not be doing the government's job.

"Abandoning entire sectors of the population and diverting much needed state resources to do the job of the federal government is not in the best interest of Texas," Rep. Jessica Ferrar, D-Houston, said.

Ferrar said the state should be stimulating economic growth, ensuring public health and supporting education.

TRUST also said immigrants make significant contributions to the agricultural economy.

The House committees on state affairs and border and international affairs will hold a joint hearing on Wednesday to discuss immigration and border security issues.

Coalition members include the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, the Texas Association of Business, the National Council of La Raza and more than a dozen other groups.

What's COMPLEX about our immigration laws?

Are they more COMPLEX than 698 pages of crap concerning every other country south of the American southern border????

    COMPLEX where?

Are these people saying that our state legislatures are NOT qualified to handle the RULE OF LAW?

Those of us in Texas need to call and write to those in Austin , I wrote to leo Berman about this and he said to write and call those who are opposed to hearing the bills on the floor , like D- Swinford out of dumas, write and tell him how you feel I did .

i called swinford's office. i made sure to make mention that i do not appreciate him telling any other elected official what is right and wrong. and that if he cant and wont put it up for vote in the house then he needs to find a way to p[ut it up to the voters of texas and let them decide, like they did in arizona last fall when everything passed 3-to-1.

i also said that he does not speak for me in determining what is right and what is wrong for the state. and i made sure he knew that the federal government gave STATES and localities to make and enforce their own laws.
i also said he was basically a coward for letting it die, then brought the numbers into play where 77 percent of babies born in the dallas fort worth area were born to illegals, and in houston its 88 percent. costing 17-20 mil in dfw, and 22-25 mil in houston
