College opens doors to illegal immigrants

WINSTON-SALEM -- Forsyth Tech will allow illegal immigrants to study in degree programs, the school announced Tuesday.

The 12-member board of trustees voted unanimously last week to approve the policy change, said Gary Green, the president of Forsyth Tech. Previously, undocumented residents could attend classes but could not work toward a diploma.

The change comes amid controversy over whether to approve a bill to allow in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Currently, those students are considered out of state and must pay higher fees.

"By opening up the doors for young people who have grown up here, we're reaffirming the principals of community colleges -- of providing access and opportunity for everyone in the community," Green said.

Last August the N.C. Community College System changed a rule to allow each community college to decide whether it wanted to admit undocumented residents.

In an interview last month the head of GTCC, Don Cameron, said the college's board had been mulling making a change prior to the start of the 2005-06 school year. Cameron could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

In November the UNC system changed its policy, allowing each of its 16 universities to decide whether to enroll undocumented immigrants.

One local advocate called Forsyth's decision a "step in the right direction."

"I encourage us to embrace opportunities for all of our youth," said Debby Kelly, the director of a local nonprofit, Centro de Accion Latino, that tutors students and counsels new immigrants on how to integrate into the community. She hopes GTCC will soon follow suit.

Forsyth's new rules say that illegal immigrant students must have a diploma from a North Carolina high school and cannot receive state or federal aid.

The school can also limit enrollment in classes such as nursing because the state does not grant professional licenses to undocumented residents.

No numbers exist for the prevalence of illegal immigrants in the local high school systems because the schools do not ask. But it is possible to track the number of students, the vast majority of whom are Latino, in English as Second Language classes.

In Guilford County, the number of Latino students in ESL classes has more than doubled to about 2,900 in the 2004-05 school year from 2002-03. Many of these students are not legal, observers say.

Without access to higher education, economists say they will be doomed to a permanent underclass like others who do not graduate from high school or work toward higher degrees.

No, you're REAFFIRMING that BREAKING THE LAW is allowed in the United States of AMERICA.

This type of "speech" gets us into trouble and brainwashes our youngsters into ACCEPTING this as normal and status quo.

    Doomed, I tell you...DOOMED!

We already pay to send them through high school! This is much more than they may have received back in their native country. If they choose or their parents (the ones who brought them here illegally in the first place) allow them to drop out of the free education being provided that is MY fault?

This is the elitist liberal 'noble obligation' at its absolute worst.

Someone stop this merry-go-round! I want off!

Well then perhaps they should enter the country LEGALLY and they wont have a problem.

We need to get laws on the books to prevent ILLEGALS from getting special treatment for BREAKING THE LAW.

Any person who aids or abetts an illegal alien in the United States is subject fines or 5 years of imprisonment or both.

North Carolina citizens support the Community Colleges with tax revenue both local and state. Community Colleges also receive grants and charitable contributions through Foundations, 501 C 3 of course.

Under federal law, Forsyth has just opened up access to its college to any person in the world.

You can lead 'em to water, but you can't make 'em drink.

Globalists are obviously well-positioned on the Boards.

So, we find another organization "helping NEW immigrants INTEGRATE into the community". Well, now, just exactly what does that mean????

I suppose we all better find out! Sounds like that "aiding and abetting" thing to me!!

I think the first complaint should be filed with the Head of the Education Committee of the North Carolina Senate as the Community Colleges fall under the State Board of Education and state authorization of some type. This is the Comittee that is reviewing the In-State Tuition Bill. I believe the NC State Board giving the Community Colleges this option made a mistake by giving that Option. Perhaps they didn't know the law. (?) They should investigate where this issue originated; who was pushing it; who or what is behind it; and get to the bottom of it.

Second, the NC State Board of Education, they started it so they should be able to end it.

Third, the Governor's Office, he is the Executive Officer and has executive control over the NC Department of Execution. If's illegal for state colleges and universities, then it should be illegal for any public funded college or university in the boundaries of North Carolina.

Fourth, the Attorney General's Office, who is responsible for protecting the civil rights of North Carolinians. Giving seats to aliens is aiding and abetting aliens and a violation of the civil rights of Americans.

The college and universities in North Carolina need to work hard to fill those seats with North Carolinians, not aliens, to prepare our society for the 21st Century, not aid and abet Globalists intent upon the demise of the American People.

IMHO, it wouldn't be hard work at all! And further more, there are American kids that would jump at the opportunity to get "in-state tuition" at out of state schools!!!

The above is what burns me up.......parents working 2 & 3 jobs to send their kids on to higher education and paying through the proverbial nose.
