NAMPA, Idaho (AP) -- Canyon County Commissioner Robert Vasquez is asking residents to boycott Nampa's daily newspaper because the publication will soon offer a Spanish-language weekly.

Vasquez, a strong opponent of illegal immigration, said the Idaho Press-Tribune aims to profit from illegal aliens by publishing La Prensa Libre. He also called the move discriminatory against English-speaking residents, because the English-language daily must be purchased while the smaller, Spanish-language weekly is free.

"The IP-T has taken yet another step toward dividing Canyon County between those proud American citizens that are fighting to hold the line against the invasion of illegal aliens, and the business interests that see only profit in the exploitation of illegal aliens," Vasquez said in a statement sent from his office with the county seal.

Idaho Press-Tribune Publisher Stephanie Pressly said Vasquez's call for a boycott was outrageous.

"For an elected official of Canyon County to call for a boycott of a long-standing, legitimate business is not only ludicrous but irresponsible," Pressly said. "Our company is meeting a local market demand, providing important and useful news and advertising information to those who prefer to read Spanish. We're certainly not catering to illegal immigrants."

The Idaho Press-Tribune will launch the 10,000-copy free-distribution La Prensa Libre on Oct. 6. The new paper will be supported entirely by advertising revenue, Pressly said.
