Traveling to Mexico, how safe is it?

04:35 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 12, 2006

By Angela Kocherga / 11 News

Political unrest and Mexico’s escalating crime, the recent being drug-related beheadings, may have Americans asking if it is safe to travel there?

Kris and Bonnie Ernst didn't hesitate when deciding to vacation in Mexico.

Television images of angry demonstrations exploding in violence in the tourist haven of Oaxaca aren’t helping.

Newspaper headlines there read: Drug cartels unprecedented brutality: Five human heads tossed onto a nightclub dance floor by masked men in Michoacan state.

By contrast the massive protests in the capital city of Mexico City were merely an inconvenience.

“Our option was not to come or to come to Mexico City,” said Kris Ernst a tourist.

That’s where he and his wife’s daughter were finishing a summer internship.

During their trip, the Ernst family visited an artisans market.

It was eerily quiet because outside the streets nearby were clogged by protestors who set up a camp after the disputed presidential election.

“It seems like it’s pretty peaceful at this point in time,” said Bonnie Ernst.

For now the U.S. Embassy is advising Americans to avoid any type of protest in Mexico noting even those that appear peaceful can suddenly erupt in violence.

That’s exactly what happened in Oaxaca City prompting the State Department to urge Americans to consider carefully the risks of traveling to the popular spot.

“We had a contact there who told us not to come because you couldn’t go outside,” said Bonnie Ernst.

Oaxaca was the Ernst’s first pick for a summer vacation.

But even in this city not a single American has been reported hurt.

With cancellations mounting the same cannot be said for Mexico’s image as a top tourist destination.

I don't believe it is safe to vacation in Mexico, with the current situation.

I can't understand why Americans would even want to ???

We should boycott Mexico since their government will not help in the situation, but promote the massive overtaking of our borders and invasion of our country.

I live in San Diego and would never go to spend my money in Mexico for any reason. I refuse to shop there and I would never go to vacation there. Not until they straighten out their act and stop sending their poor and criminal elements here. San Diego has actually become home to a huge group of Mexican drug cartel members. They know the local police will do nothing and the local U.S. attorney Carol Lam has her head up her arse when it comes to prosecuting Mexican organized crime figures. Hell, she only prosecutes 6% of all criminal alien smugglers they catch here. That's right, she releases 94% of all alien smugglers caught in the San Diego sector.

SAN DIEGO – The vast majority of people caught smuggling immigrants across the border near San Diego are never prosecuted for the offense, demoralizing the Border Patrol agents making the arrests, according to an internal document obtained by The Associated Press.

“It is very difficult to keep agents' morale up when the laws they were told to uphold are being watered-down or not prosecuted,” the report says.

The report offers a stark assessment of the situation at a Border Patrol station responsible for guarding 13 miles of mountainous border east of the city. Federal officials say it reflects a reality along the entire 2,000-mile border: Judges and federal attorneys are so swamped that only the most egregious smuggling cases are prosecuted.

Only 6 percent of 289 suspected immigrant smugglers were prosecuted by the federal government for that offense in the year ending in September 2004, according to the report. Some were instead prosecuted for another crime. Other cases were declined by federal prosecutors, or the suspect was released by the Border Patrol.
