Congress unwilling to deal with illegal immigration
    By Kris Reason

America is becoming a back alley for the world's criminals, derelicts, vagrants and terrorists. Because some in Congress are too inept and partisan to strengthen our pitiful border security and immigration laws, 20 million illegal aliens, including Arab terrorists, have waltzed into our country and escaped prosecution. And this number is rapidly growing.

These noncitizens are parasites who live off the prosperity of honest, hardworking Americans, and send their tax-free income back into their native country.

The terrorists who have illegally made their way into our midst are profiting from our economy, while plotting to mass murder us; these monsters are willing to wait for years to achieve their goal and Americans are inadvertently subsidizing them.

In addition, many Mexicans who enter the country illegally are hardened criminals who are fleeing from prosecution in Mexico. Twenty-five percent of the incarcerated criminals in America are illegal aliens, according to debate on the
floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. And in California alone, more than 1,000 are outstanding on noncitizens who are wanted for felonies. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that for the sake of Americans safety, every illegal intruder should be deported.

Recently, the House of Representatives narrowly passed the House Bill 418, promoted by Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner, R.-Wis., that provides for driver's license and visa reform, stronger border patrol, a security fence for three miles of open U.S.-Mexican boarder, the deportation of illegal aliens, stricter asylum laws and guidelines for immigration judges. The bill, which replaced the measures that Congress stripped from the 9/11 Commission's recommendations, was hotly debated in the House.

This is absurd. The bill should have passed overwhelmingly, without any debate, because the United States is at war and border security is crucial to our national security. There is a real possibility that Sensenbrenner's
bill may not pass in the Senate because self-serving, obstructionist members of Congress - like Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi - are willing to put 282 million Americans in danger, and protect 20 million lawbreakers who don't belong in the United States.

In Arizona, the legal citizens finally got fed up with the federal government's indifference to their problems with noncitizens who are draining their social services and raising the crime rate. Arizonans took illegal immigration into their own hands by putting Arizona Proposition 200 on the ballot. The bill requires voters to have valid proof of citizenship and denies social benefits to illegal aliens. The initiative passed by a 56 percent margin, despite opposition from politicians. It's interesting that 47 percent of Hispanics voted for it.

In addition, the Arizona government is billing the federal government for the cost of incarcerating criminal noncitizens. Other states should follow Arizona's example and demand accountability
from both Congress and President George W. Bush.

It is virtually impossible to deport undocumented citizens once they are in the United States, thanks to our liberal courts. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that immigration judges cannot take action against aliens who lie about their real identity. Also, U.S. asylum laws are so broad that foreigners can obtain refugee status using false identities. This makes it impossible to find them once they disappear in our country. Other loopholes in asylum laws have enabled known terrorists from terrorist countries to gain asylum in the United States. One of these terrorists has been caught plotting to blow up a shopping mall.

The lenience of the U.S. judicial system toward illegal immigration is demonstrated by the fact that noncitizens are allowed to pursue one more step in the appellate process than are legal citizens. This gives illegal aliens more rights than tax-paying, law-abiding Americans.

    Illegal
aliens are also grossly polluting the environment at the U.S.-Mexican border. After sneaking over the border, they congregate by the thousands in places like the Tijuana estuary where they wait to be transported into the United States. The illegal migrants have turned these areas into huge dumps that contain biohazards like syringes, diapers, garbage, feminine hygiene products and human excrement. The U.S. government is not doing anything about this dangerous pollution.

In addition to Sensenbrenner's bill, Congress should enact laws that penalize with fines, criminal charges and automatic IRS audits employers who hire illegal aliens. This would deter both the employers and the illegal immigrants from profiting by breaking the law.

It is ironic that several people have been kept out of government office because they employed one illegal alien. Yet businesses have been employing thousands of noncitizens for years. Bush's hypocritical guest worker program would only be
fair to the American people if illegal aliens who are already here are deported and then re-enter the country legally.

The American people should write to their U.S. senators and demand that they enact the most elementary principles of border security and immigration control by voting for Sensenbrenner's bill. If it is not passed in the Senate, we will continue to be plagued by a growing number of illegal aliens who endanger the safety and integrity of our country.
