The Indiana Democratic Party sued in federal court Monday seeking to overturn a new state law that requires most voters to show government-issued photo identification before casting a ballot.

The lawsuit claims the law, which is among the strictest in the nation, violates the U.S. Constitution and federal voting laws. It is slated to take effect July 1.

Critics say requiring a photo ID at the polls unfairly affects the poor, minorities, people with disabilities and the elderly, many of whom do not have driver's licenses and might struggle to obtain a photo ID.

Dan Parker, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said there have been no recorded instances of voter fraud at the polls that could be prevented by the bill.

Supporters say the law is needed to guard against voter fraud. The law offers free photo ID cards for those who cannot afford a driver's license and makes exemptions for some people in nursing homes and state institutions.

Sorry all, I simply could not hold that in!

I just don't get it. I don't care if there is an R or a D behind the name. Knowing WHO is voting is KEY to stop fraud.

Where I vote, they simply have a large registration book. You simply state your name and address, and they look it up (in front of you), and you sign. No ID, no nothing. Nothing would stop me from voting VERY early, looking at a few names on the list, when they are flipping pages, and then return to continue to vote for other people. If a person voted early, and late, it would be pretty easy to cast more than one vote. Also, if someone NOT EVEN legal to vote, or registred, simply showed up, and used my name (and address), then nothing stops them from voting. I think what would happen, is that when I showed up later to vote, I would not be allowed to vote, but the other vote already dropped in the box would stand.

But these damn pollies want nothing more than to get every vote, both the legal ones, AND the non-valid ones. I would LOVE to see something as strong as this in my state (and in ALL states in the US). At least then, it would be more work to cheat the system.

They really mean to say it affects illegal aliens who don't have these documents on them because they have no legal right to even be in this country and the Dems are sad because this is causing them to lose their fradulent voting base. I'm surprised they didn't include dead people in their little whinefest too.
