    WASHINGTON – Conservatives spoke out Thursday in favor of stepping up border enforcement while criticizing so-called reform plans they dismiss as "amnesty" for illegal immigrants in speeches and panel discussions at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

    The Republican leadership in Washington isn't expected to raise immigration as a front-burner issue in the near term, they said, but conservatives are even more skeptical of any “immigration reformâ€

    Much of the Conservative Political Action Conference’s mainstream media coverage focuses on this year’s Washington D.C. convention as a stage for Republican presidential candidates to launch their 2012 campaign but the reality is that the annual event offers lots more than partisan politics.

    The gathering of the nation’s most prominent and influential conservatives also addresses crucial issues, including illegal immigration, gun rights, terrorism and government transparency. In fact, Judicial Watch will hold a panel focusing on the federal public records law known as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) on Saturday.     Lamar Smith would be wise to proceed with hearings intended to implement Universal E-Verify and to connect that implementation with jobs for Americans.
