Conyngham Borough council taking a wait and see approach to Hazelton type ordinance

In other issues before the council Tuesday, Robert Robbins, council president, said the borough received some calls inquiring if council was going to pass an ordinance similar to Hazleton on illegal immigrants.
Robbins said he thought council should take a “wait and see” attitude about the illegal immigration law for now.

Council concerns seemed to be how legal challenges against Hazleton’s newly amended ordinances will play out in court.

“I can tell you that this (Illegal Immigration) Ordinance passed in Hazleton is the final draft and this version is very strong and expected to withstand judicial scrutiny and challenges,” said Chris Slusser, who serves as solicitor for both Hazleton and Conyngham.

For now, Conyngham council members appeared unified on taking a “wait and see” stance.

“I think the opposition has elected to make Hazleton a battleground for this issue,” Slusser said.

He also said the English-only ordinance that was separated from the illegal immigration law has already been challenged in court in another area of the country and it stood up in court.
