Cornyn backs off birthright citizenship debate

HIDALGO — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn on Friday backed off his support of Congress taking up birthright citizenship after earlier joining prominent Republicans who have called for a review of the 14th Amendment.
"It is going after a symptom rather than the cause of the problem in the first place," Cornyn said.
Cornyn, the head of the GOP Senate campaign committee, softened his stance while visiting a port of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border. He met with the Texas Border Coalition, a group of local mayors and business leaders focused on border security and traffic backlogs at ports that affect commerce.
The coalition also opposes calls to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. but whose parents are illegal immigrants. Birthright citizenship is a constitutional right under the 14th Amendment.
Senate Republicans recently have suggested that right may be due for a second look amid the raging national debate over immigration. Supporters argue a change will discourage immigrants who have children on U.S. soil to use them to stay in the country.
Earlier this month, Cornyn was quoted in The Dallas Morning News as saying, "We need to have hearings. We need to consult constitutional scholars and study what the implications are."
Cornyn said Friday his new remarks didn't amount to his stance shifting.
"I was asked a question whether I would participate in hearings on the issue," Cornyn said. "And I said, 'Well, sure, I'm happy to do my job and listen to expert witnesses.' But upon further reflection I really think it is a symptom and not the cause."
He then took aim at border security.
"I think it would be a moot issue if, in fact, the federal government was doing its job of border security and enforcing the law," Cornyn said.
A Pew Hispanic Center study released this month said that one in 12 children born in the U.S. has at least one parent who is in the country illegally.

The ILLEGALS continue their invasion of the United States with the exploitation of the 14th Amendment to create an Anchor for U.S. Citizens to furnish benefits! The Elitist Politicians and Elitist Contributors are socializing benefits to the ILLEGALS for the ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS, veiled as social programs for U. S. Citizens, on the backs of U.S. Citizens through our assets such as the Education System, Social Security, and Health Care not to mention our National Security while privatizing the profits for themselves! The reason the ILLEGALS have the Anchors, furnishing a opportune SOB story, is to stay in the U.S. to receive the benefits, their Anchors are nothing more than throwaways for their agenda; if they were important to the parents they would take their children with them when they returned to their HOME countries . They do not want to be Citizens of the U.S. only to the extent that it would allow the ILLEGALS to remain in the U.S. for our tax money and they will return south of the border as soon as they have drained the U.S. Dry.

ILLEGALS’ invading our Nation is not a partisan issue; there are Politicians in both major Political Parties who are against Amnesty, for Enforcement, and Securing our Borders. However, during the last few years I have learned that many Politicians that you vote for under a set of parameters much as children always test the limits of how far they go and to see what they can get away with in office. They under pressure from Special Interest Groups and Elitist Political Contributors and we have to continue to remind the Politicians that we will remove them from office if they want to serve the Special Interest Groups and not the Citizens.

Of course it is a cause; if taxpayers did not provide for the illegal alien dependents' maternity care and 18 years of supporting the anchor children, illegal aliens coming here just to work would leave their spouses back home.
