Huntsville, AL - Alabama State Representative Micky Hammon joined Erin Dacy and TW Starr for an exclusive interview on Thursday morning in the WAAY 31 FirstNews studios. Hammon was there to talk about the controversial immigration bill he sponsored that's been making national headlines since going into effect last month.

When asked if the law was having it's desired effect, Hammon seemed very content with the way things have been going. ""Absolutely. There's two things I think that we are proving so far." Hammon said. "One is that the illegal immigrants will self-deport. We're seeing them leave all over the state in huge numbers. So we don't have to arrest them and handcuff them and put them on a bus. They will leave on their own."

"The second thing we're proving is that people in Alabama will take these jobs. I know we see a lot of stories about fruit - people picking fruit, and I know there's some problems in that particular market, but I've had so many people contact me and thank me for the job that they're able to have. They needed a job. And as you see people in the service industry and people in these plants leaving, they're hiring Americans to do these jobs, and legal immigrants, and we're putting people back to work."

Hammon fired back at the Federal Government as well, saying the Obama administration was offering what he described as "back door amnesty" to illegal immigrants through the Department of Homeland Security. He also accused the administration of trying to legislate policy through the Justice Department regarding illegals. This comes a day after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that DHS won't get involved in the enforcement of Alabama's immigration law. "This does not surprise me," Hammon said. "because in July, they sent out a letter, Napolitano sent out a letter to everyone in the immigration department to release from the court system any illegal immigrant that was already in the court system that was no a hardened criminal. So not only are they not picking them up, they're giving backdoor amnesty and a green light for everyone in the world to come here illegally because we will not prosecute you."

When asked if he thought the law would encourage racial profiling and discrimination, Hammon said he and other lawmakers were extremely careful on that sensitive issue. "We have, over and over and over again throughout this law, stated within the law that there'll be no racial profiling, no discrimination of any kind. There is so much misinformation.. You can't just stop someone because of the way they look. Law enforcement officers cannot do that, they have to have a reason to stop someone."
