EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Three South Jersey boys have lost their parents in horrible crash in their Egg Harbor Township house.
About 4:30 a.m., a sport utility vehicle crashed into the bedroom of Jose Varela, 40, and Blanco Santiago, 32, landing on top of the sleeping couple and killing them. The house is located along busy Route 40, at the Black Horse Pike and Athens Avenue.
The couple's three sons ages 16, 14, and 10, were also home at the time of the accident, but they were not injured.
Police have identified the driver of the Chevrolet Blazer as 27-year-old Ober Canales, of Atlantic City. Lt. Ted Kammer, of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, said that the unlicensed driver tried to flee from the accident scene, but was stopped by witnesses who kept him until police arrived on the scene.
Investigators said Canales is a Honduran national who had fraudulent Social Security and resident alien papers with him.
Police said that they are looking into a number of possible causes for the crash, including weather conditions and driving under the influence. Police and the Atlantic County prosecutors' office said it was raining hard at the time of the accident.
Canales is facing two counts of vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in jail in lieu of $750,000.
Relatives said the family was planning to move to a quieter street because they thought the Black Horse Pike was too busy and dangerous.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn

MAYS LANDING — A man accused of driving drunk, crashing into a West Atlantic City home and running over a couple while they slept in their bed was indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury on aggravated manslaughter charges, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Blitz said Friday.
Ober Canales, 27, of Atlantic City, also was charged in the nine-count indictment with vehicular homicide, attempting to leave the scene of an accident, and possessing and displaying false government documents, Blitz said.
The illegal immigrant from Honduras is charged with the Dec. 9, 2005, killing of Blanca Santiago, 32, and Jose Varela, 40, in the Black Horse Pike home the couple shared with their three sons. The children were not injured.
Blitz said the couple did not die from the impact of the crash. Autopsy reports list the cause of death as compression asphyxia. Canales' sport utility vehicle rested on the top of the couple after crashing through their bedroom wall. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Blitz, Canales fled the scene, and when police caught him, he showed a fake resident alien card and a false Social Security card.
Egg Harbor Township Police Officer Al Maiorano, assisted by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Fatal Collision Unit, investigated the crash. Canales was arrested soon after the crime and remains in Atlantic County jail on $750,000 bail, Blitz said.
