Crash On I-70 Kills 4 Migrants

Crash on I-70 kills four migrants
Near Green River: Officials say the SUV had traveled from California overnight

    By Nate Carlisle
    The Salt Lake Tribune

A Chevrolet Suburban carrying 11 people suspected of being undocumented migrants ran off Interstate 70 on Saturday, throwing passengers into the desert and killing four people.
A fifth injured person was not expected to survive, said David Ward, resident agent in charge of the central Utah office of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
The nine men and two women are thought to be in the United States illegally. Ward said the victims are Latino and were not speaking English.
"We couldn't find any identification at the scene to determine who is who," Ward said.
The survivors were taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., and federal agents were there Saturday night trying to interview them.
Ward said investigators found grocery receipts from purchases made earlier Saturday in Barstow, Calif.
The wreck happened about 11:45 a.m. about 15 miles east of Green River.
The Suburban, which had Oklahoma license plates, went into the median on the left, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. The driver overcorrected, he said, and sent the Suburban tumbling off the right side of the road and through a fence. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
The Utah Highway Patrol said Saturday night it was still investigating how the wreck happened. Ward said it appears the driver, who was among those killed, fell asleep.
Several people were ejected from the
vehicle, said UHP Sgt. Todd Royce. Three people died at the scene.
One died on the way to St. Mary's. Ward said everyone in the Suburban was an adult. He did not know if either of the women was among the dead.
Federal and state investigators on Saturday night were still trying to determine the identities of the dead and the survivors, as well their countries of origin and immigration status.
I-70 is known as an artery for immigrant traffic. Vehicles from California and Arizona drive to Utah to pull onto the interstate and reach points in the Midwest or eastern United States.
In October, a northbound Dodge Caravan carrying 16 undocumented immigrants overturned on U.S. 191 south of Moab.
Two people died. The driver became drowsy or fell asleep about 6:45 a.m.
Ward said the crashes Saturday and in October appear to be part of a pattern where immigrant vehicles from California or Arizona leave during the night to arrive in Utah.

I guess we're going to have to have some "special" interest group out there with free coffee to aid in their criminal behavior.
