Dreamers thankfully may be saved by Trump

Another view: Dreamers thankfully may be saved by Trump

In this July 25, 2014, file photo, DREAM Action Coalition Co-Director Cesar Vargas,
middle, joined by Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill., left, and Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., right,
speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington calling on the
Department of Defense to allow "DREAMERs" to serve in the military. After coming
out of the shadows and organizing on their own to advocate for immigration relief,
many young immigrants known as dreamers are taking sides with political parties
and working or volunteering for presidential campaigns.(Photo: SUSAN WALSH/AP)

During his campaign, President Trump promised to rescind a stack of executive orders issued by President Obama, thrilling supporters who agreed that Obama had abused his authority.

Now Trump is sending signals that he's in no hurry to overturn the 2012 executive order that defers deportation for approximately 750,000 undocumented immigrants — including tens of thousands in Florida — who were brought to our country as children by their parents.

That is good news for young people scared to death that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, will be erased and they'll be returned to the native, yet foreign, countries of their birth.

While Trump is right to focus on deporting immigrants who've committed serious crimes, these young immigrants, called Dreamers, shouldn't be punished for the acts of their parents. For many of them, our country is all they know. They've been attending school, getting jobs, going to college, just like everyone else. So it's wonderful to see that Trump — at least for the moment — seems to agree.

At his press briefing Monday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer indicated that deportation of Dreamers will not be a priority.

"The focus is going to be on people who have done harm to our country," he said.

And over the weekend, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus also made clear that Trump has no immediate plans to deport the youngsters, but would instead work with Congress on a workable solution.

"I think we're going to work with the House and Senate leadership, as well as to get a long-term solution on that issue," Priebus said.
Of the roughly 750,000 young people now covered under DACA, 95 percent are working or studying, according to FWD.us, an advocacy organization founded by technology industry leaders.

Work permits are critical for DACA recipients seeking college degrees, because they are ineligible for federal student aid. Those recipients, as a group, are strong contributors to our economy: More than half have purchased vehicles; 12 percent have bought homes; and 6 percent have started businesses.

Last month, anticipating a change in policy, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators — three Republicans and two Democrats — introduced legislation called the Bridge Act that would let DACA recipients maintain their work permits and receive relief from deportation for three years. That would give Congress until 2020 to come up with a lasting solution.

One of the sponsors, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham, believes DACA is unconstitutional and supports a repeal. But he also said, "I do not believe we should pull the rug out and push these young men and women — who came out of the shadows and registered with the federal government — back into the darkness."

Florida's junior senator, Republican Marco Rubio, told Politico he would prefer to phase out DACA, barring renewal of existing work permits after they expire, while Congress works out a plan. But under that approach, 10,000 recipients a week would lose their jobs and protection from deportation. Who knows how much social disruption and economic damage would occur before lawmakers finally act?

DACA opponents should consider what Trump said in a Time magazine interview last month about the immigrants who qualify. "They got brought here at a very young age, they've worked here, they've gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they're in never-never land because they don't know what's going to happen."

During the campaign, Trump's base got excited by his intention to deport undocumented immigrants, but it's to no one's advantage to go after Dreamers.

In the short term, Congress should end the uncertainty, and steer clear of turmoil, by passing the Bridge Act.

And in the long term, as they crack down on illegal immigration, it should find a way to give permanent status to those upstanding immigrants who came here through no fault of their own, and who are helping make our country great.

No Bridge Act. We're passing a Wall Act, ending NAFTA, enforcing our laws. You are doing these people a great disservice by misleading them to believe they will be able to stay here. Trump will terminate immediately or allow DACA to expire. Either way, they need to plan now and move home or move on.

Very few DACAs are "making our country great". They are stealing jobs and educations, breeding citizens, protesting and interfering in our political process, and disrupting our own domestic tranquility. Many are committing crimes but haven't been caught yet. So, there is no benefit to to the United States for them to be given special treatment. They need to go home with their illegal parents who brought them here, take their children with them, and live their lives in their nation of citizenship where they belong.

President Trump said that we want people who love us to be here in the United States. The illegal aliens do not love us when they demand things they have no right to demand, demonstrate and carry foreign flags, step in front of our loved ones, harm and kill, steal and fake identities, take monies that they are not entitled to from taxpayers. They will never turn around and respect us if you reward them. If you know illegal aliens are voting please don't give these foreign citizens even greater opportunity to vote against the best interests of the American people. Please don't reward their resentment.

These illegal aliens and all illegal aliens need to return home and make their nations answer for the reasons that they left. They need to make their countries great. They are not helping ours.

They all have to go and sooner the better so the issue is behind US instead of looming out there worrying everyone. End it now. Get it behind US. Most of them are from Mexico, a short trip home. Get it over with now.

I heard a Mexican official on a PBS report defending NAFTA. Isn't it odd that the left has done nothing but complain about NAFTA for the last two decades? And also placed it at the root of Mexican illegal immigration to the US? And now they don't want Trump to change it.

Yes, it is amazing how quickly Trump is exposing ALL the frauds and traitors in DC. Did you notice the mild applause when he mentioned his withdrawal from the TPP?!

He's got this. He's working it in all directions. Democrats will be exposed as the frauds they've been all along on "free trade" and Republicans will be exposed on their "secure borders". He'll force both parties to the right things or be responsible personally for the "American carnage".

The signals we're getting from Trump's administration and the congressional leadership just doesn't validate the assumption that he'll terminate the program immediately. And the fact that they are still accepting renewal request and new applications for DACA doesn't make it seem like Trump is interested in letting the program expire either.

It is my believe that Trump is waiting on a legalization plan from the U.S. Congress that will protect the so-called Dreamers. This plan will be an amnesty program in the form of legislation that will protect them from deportation and set them on a path to eventual citizenship. When that bill is signed into law, then he'll end DACA or allow it to expire because there will no longer be a need for it.

No need to argue over this because the only thing that will reveal which of us is correct is time. However, I do suggest we keep pressuring the Trump administration to end DACA now! If he is thinking along the lines I identified, perhaps enough pressure from the American people will change his mind.

I hope he cuts off ALL government freebies including tax refunds. Do this now, a lot of them will leave when the gravy dries up.

Get them out of our schools, no government benefits to illegals.

They need to send some family members back, get a job and get housing established and then the rest get out. Many already have family there...they wire their money back every week.

No more sob stories, they are LIARS and cheats. Get them out quickly.
